Polygonal Mind
Polygonal Mind was a creative development studio and digital art collective that specialized in 3D modeling, avatar creation, and immersive digital experiences. Founded with a passion for pushing the boundaries of digital art, the studio offered cutting-edge solutions for a wide range of industries, from gaming to virtual reality.
/// Polygonal Mind was a project I co-founded with a friend in 2015, originally aimed at developing cool mobile games we loved. After a year, my partner parted ways, prompting me to pivot the studio's focus towards providing art outsourcing services for indie game developers.
Soon after, Polygonal Mind began collaborating with Crescent Moon Games on Morphite, a No Man's Sky-inspired game with low-poly graphics, which was a huge success on Apple devices. As the team grew, we expanded our portfolio, contributing art and assets to various high-profile projects like Beat Saber, Physera, and Totally Reliable Delivery Service.
Polygonal Mind's evolution saw it grow from a small startup into a key player in the indie gaming world, known for its unique artistic style and creative contributions.
/// In 2019, Polygonal Mind expanded into the metaverse, starting with Decentraland. We got involved early on by creating virtual art galleries for independent crypto art collectors. From there, our presence grew across various metaverse platforms, including Decentraland, CryptoVoxels, Oncyber, Hyperfy, Monaverse, Roblox, and Fortnite.
Much of our work was client-driven, serving a diverse range of industries and customers worldwide. At the same time, we dedicated efforts to developing our own experiences, tools, and games, leveraging engines like Unity, Three.js, and Unreal Engine. This period marked a significant expansion of our creative scope, helping us carve out a niche in the emerging virtual worlds.
/// The studio grew into a thriving creative powerhouse, with a team of over 40 people, successfully completing more than 180 projects across a broad spectrum of industries.
Notable achievements include collaborations with:
Yuga Labs: Crafted 3D models for the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) enabling avatars to be metaverse-ready.
Beat Saber: Made environments for this iconic VR rhythm game.
Forbes: Designed metaverse experiences for events in platforms like The Sandbox, focusing on Web3 and NFTs.
Doritos & Mountain Dew: Executed virtual campaigns for these global brands.
Crescent Moon Games: Contributed to Morphite, a stylized sci-fi exploration game that became a hit on Apple devices.
MegaCube: Designed and executed the MegaCube event, an innovative metaverse experience that drew thousands of players into a shared virtual challenge.
Opportunity
/// In the summer of 2024, market conditions finally caught up, and Polygonal Mind was closed down. However, it left a lasting legacy in metaverse design, pushing the boundaries of immersive 3D environments and virtual branding.
Before closing, Polygonal Mind amassed a repository of thousands of CC0 assets created over the years. As an independent studio, it was always an advocate for open-source work, art quality, and optimization.
