Open Source Avatars is the culmination of years of creating free avatars for the community. After creating over 300 CC0 avatars through the 100 Avatars project and other initiatives, there was a need for a centralized home where anyone could easily browse, preview, and download these avatars.

The platform is built around the VRM format—the best open standard for humanoid avatars—ensuring compatibility across a wide range of applications from VRChat to web-based metaverse platforms.

Built with modern web technologies, the platform leverages Three.js for real-time 3D rendering directly in the browser. The VRM format provides standardized features including:
